Once we got as far as Central America, it was decision-making time. Either we tear through on the Pan Americana to make it to Alaska by summer or we take it easy and enjoy the ride up to the Yucatan Peninsula. We opted for the latter and decided to add on a loop in Europe, leaving the rest of North America for another trip.

From Cartagena, Colombia, we took a boat to the San Blas Islands on Panama’s eastern shore and worked our way up as far as the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. It was a relaxed four months of beaches, volcanoes, Mayan ruins, colonial towns and colourful markets.
